ABOUT ME

Russell has been passionate about photography since a small child. When young he came into the orbit of two great photographers, the late Laon Maybanke, a celebrity London portrait photographer in the early 1960’s, and the late Humphrey-Saunders, who had a studio in Russell’s home town.
Maybanke was a master in square-format film whilst Humphrey-Saunders, then very elderly, still utilized 10x8 cherrywood view cameras from the 19th century with glass plates and sheet film. Observing these two masters of their craft Russell gained a priceless foundation in analogue techniques and the traditional craft of one-shot large format composition and manual exposure calculation.
Using film and later digital equipment, Russell has sold freelance images around the world through press agencies and picture libraries, including Rex Features, which has offices in London, New-York and Los Angeles. He is also a contributor to iStock by Getty Images. Russell also represented media professionals in the South-West of England as Bristol branch freelance officer for the National Union of Journalists.
Russell is also a barrister.
More recently Russell has concentrated on fine art nature images, combining techniques from large format traditional photography with the best of modern digital technology, producing images capable of spectacular enlargement suitable for wall art.
